Panamericana, Ruta 5, Carretera Austral

  • Name: Panamericana, Ruta 5, Carretera Austral?
  • Must See - wichtigste Punkte
  • Beste Jahreszeit

  • You can go as far as Cochrane thru Chile, and then you have no choice but to go in to Argentina until Torres del Paine. Unless you catch the ferry all the way from puerto Montt to puerto natales, but that would suck. The careterra austral is one of my favourite roads

Alles kein Problem. 4x4 ist schön, aber nicht notwendig. Vernünftige Reifen allerdings wegen des “ripios”. Überall gibt es Fähren.

  • Yes, but is the Careterra Austral and ferries, or the Puerto Montt ferry, open for foreign (Canada registered) vehicles to travel? Puerto Montt and surrounding areas are shown in Plan Paso a Paso, https://www.sernatur.cl/gobierno-anuncia-cambios-en-el.../, as Cuarentena or Transicion, closed to travel

  • You can travel without crossing into Argentina if you catch the longer ferry from Puerto Yungay to Puerto Natales. But if you're driving one-way only, it is very worth the trouble of crossing into Argentina and visiting El Chaltén and El Calafate.
Renting a vehicle one way can be very expensive, unless you catch the specific time of the year when rental companies are moving their vehicle to Punta Arenas for the summer or back north before winter. At those times I've seen good offers at campervan rentals.
There are places to stay all along the way, but especially during summer you'd be better off pre-booking them or having a tent.

    • Actually the NaviMag is a great trip, avoids enjoying the same, samey crosswinds a second time. But best probably saved for the return trip!
    • But navimag lost a wessel some time ago...but beautiful journey

  • Bin die Carretera Austral von Puerto Montt bis Villa o'Higgins, mit NP Torres del Paine, Moreno Gletscher bis Ushuaia mit meinem Nissan Patrol mit Dachzelt gefahren. Kein Prpblem, wunderschön aber windig. Mit Wohnwagen eher nicht wegen einiger Cravel A...

  • I recommend, the catedral de marmol, the Patagonia National Park, the funny little village of tortal. There's a great road from the Pat Nat Park through Paso Roballos to Argentina. We loved the boat trip on Navimag from P Montt to P Aysen - but it was ...

  • That’s all well and good for “at some point”. Is any of this open, available, practical for a foreign registered vehicle and driver NOW?
  • Unfortunately for the moment some mentioned ferries are not boarding foreigners and some only freight, has to be checked closer by.

  • I took the ferry from puerto natales to puerto yungay witch is two days!
Than you have to take several smaller ferries to reach puerto mont.
You can do it easy by normal car.
I camped all the way but you also can stay in hotels!
I think you just need to book in advanced.
About the season. Its one of the wettest places on earth. So i dont know when to go.

Es gibt zig Youtube Videos dazu:
Ganz offen und ehrlich mit vielen Tipps
